Outside, the therapist readies the private treatment room. She dims the lights and selects some soothing classical music, which soon fills the brisk, air-conditioned room with sweet sorrow. She prepares the accessories of her trade, pure essential oils, Jurlique skin care products, body scrub and towels knowing that her most valuable tools are her own two hands. Her guest has selected "energy"essential oil for her full body massage and grapeseed oil to form the base. Meanwhile in the sauna, the guest begins to wonder if her therapist has forgotten about her. Although it has only been ten minutes, the guest has become restless and she makes a mental note to request a shorter sauna time on her next visit. As if by heavenly intervention, the door suddenly opens with a cool gust of air and the genteel therapist escorts her guest to the massage table. The body scrub procedure is best performed straight after the sauna when impurities have been extracted with the perspiration. The scrub is comprised of a mixture of herbal extracts. The calendula, witch hazel and lavendar act as cleansing agents while the small granules of herbs have a more functional role, literally to scrub the skin clean of dirt and grime. It is not painful; in fact the guest comes to enjoy the new sensation of her skin, however she has not yet been able to relax.
After a quick shower, which is impressively equipped with shower gel created from her choice of essential oil, the guest is invited back to the massage table. The therapist starts at the feet, applying some essential oil to her palms before gently massaging away the tension. She applies pressure to selected areas, using fingertips, knuckles and thumbs, secretly healing numerous parts of the body through reflexology. The guest, who is already sleepy, revises her earlier assessment of the spa experience, admitting that she now feels more relaxed than she has done for months. The full body massage lasted for the next 90-minutes, with the guest quietly drifting in and out of dreamy slumber, whilst the therapist continued massaging and kneading away pinches, aches and pains. Throughout the massage, the guest is constantly impressed with the therapist's eloquent English, not only in terms of grammatical accuracy, but also in the pleasantness of her tone. Often a language barrier can bring unwanted mental effort during a massage and the guest truly recognizes the skill of the therapist and her teacher. The facial begins with a deep cleansing treatment and is followed by a number of techniques designed to expel impurities and other nasties from the skin. The guest listens to the music and is once again lulled into sleep, awoken only by a second therapist massaging her arms and legs.
After another 90-minutes of pampering, the therapist gently awakens her guest and leads her outside to the salon. It had been decided that although this heavenly scrub, massage and facial therapy has immeasurable health benefits, it does nothing for one's hair.
